Last night we had quite a party under a huge bridge at a very busy thorough-fare called Crossing located in the heart of Metro Manila. 100+ street people attended some I've known and worked with from the time they were kids and now they have families of their own! When the Majams, Mary Ann and I showed up at the party there where lots of "high-fives", hugs and slaps on the back. We had a great time singing, playing, holding babies and laughing so we must have been an odd site to the many on-lookers who stopped to watch the festivities during their evening commute.
We worked with a church called Point of Grace and the party was their kick-off in this street ministry. For the past year they've been asking God for a ministry to the street people around Crossing and it started due to the compassion of one of their members. Melanie, who works in a nearby call center, while on her way home late in evening after work would feed kids bread and juice. Of course, she told her pastor and church-mates about this and they started to have a prayer burden over the plight of those she was feeding out of her own pocket. For about a year we too have been praying for a church to pick up the ministry at Crossing and through a mutual friend we were introduced to each other and decided to have this party. In early January we'll train the church how to work with street people.
