Monday a few of us visited Joel and Rachel Alviar who started the Jireh Home orphanage 30 years ago in Castillejos, Zambales. They started with a vision and lots of faith but nothing else. Today the Jireh Home has five cottages for orphans, a farm where they rise chickens, vegetables and rice, a school with 149 students kindergarten through elementary and a good size church along with church-planting. This work is under the Philippine Faith Mission which is totally Filipino lead but well connected world-wide with an excellent reputation. I first met the Alviars in June 1991 after Mt. Pinatubo erupted which is located 20 kilometers from the Jireh Home. The Home then became our long-time base for relief and development ministry through-out Southern Zambales. We ate a lot of ash with our Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) supplied by the US Navy in those crazy but fulfilling days. It was great to remember those times with Joel and Rachel and see our God's continuing faithfulness to His loyal faithful servants.
