Responding to the cry of the poor

We are surrounded by hungry people both physically and spiritually. Next Monday SITeam will conduct two workshops for pastors, workers and missionaries serving in Batangas province on how we do our Fish and Bread feeding ministry in cooperation with churches, community leaders, parents and the Departments of Social Welfare, Health and at some sites Education. There will be many from throughout Batangas attending this kick-off event for their province wide joint ministry in '14. We are very happy that peoples' ears are hearing the cry of the poor and their hearts, hands and feet are being moved with Jesus' compassion as they use their voices to proclaim the Gospel.

This week SITeam drafted our plan to provide supplemental rice for at least 100 families still residing in Internally Displaced People camps in Compostela Valley. They've stayed in evacuation centers and IDP camps since typhoon Bopha/Pablo smashed them December 4 and many are going hungry. Our team ministered to these 100 families in January when we debriefed their trauma and gave relief items to them so we want to continue building our relationship with them in partnership with churches we're partnering with there. Lord willing we'll distribute the rice March 13-16.

We also sent funds to Compostela Valley this week to help with a pregnant woman's medical expenses who's due date is February 27. She and her husband lost *everything* in a mudslide including the money they were saving for the birth of their baby. His job was also washed out and they are staying in an IDP camp. This week it rained hard in Compostela Valley so life is very difficult for many. In situations like this prostitution, trafficking and crime isn't far behind because people are desperate and hungry.
